THE REAL DEAL: Chances Are . . . Someone You See Today Will Have A Gambling Problem In The Future. |
The lights, sights, sounds, the excitement of some gambling environments can pose a problem for the recovering individual. The mental and emotional ''rush'' created and re-created by countless win-or-lose scenarios can easily draw a recovering person into a new, yet equally debilitating addiction or co-occurring disorder.
Problem gambling reduces--and may even prevent--the positive outcomes of addiction treatment. Even persons with long-term recovery are not immune to the lure of the win. Whether in casinos or bingo parlors, what begins as a seemingly harmless and legitimate form of entertainment, can end with financial ruin, destroyed relationships, guilt and remorse, isolation, and/or relapse. (See 2006 Problem Gambling Prevalance Survey.)
